Welcome to our world Mark - s**t, isn't it :\

We know exactly where you are coming from - Personally, I was prescribed HU immediately, and then went off to spend a load of time on Google to find the answers - Information is a great thing, except when it's contradictory, as we see a lot. So, after a great deal of thought, stress, and upset, I decided to decline the drugs. That was over ten years ago, and I'm still here and no heart attack or stroke (yet, touch wood) - As you have said, that does not mean anyone else won't have a problem even with a lower count than mine (as your example of Joyce proves), but I am proof that drugs are not essential to carry on with life, and you'll also see cases of the side effects being worse than any symptom, so what do you do?

What you decide in the short, or long term is a very personal thing - You have to look at your own situation, gather information, and discuss with your Docs (don't forget to include family in this too, as they are a great source of support). The early days are the worst, as it's very difficult coming to terms with this, and your own mortality.

If you feel that HU would be a better option (it would be my choice), then you should go for it.

My Platelets are charted, and you can see these on the 'My Story' page on my website www.mej.org.uk/thrombo/PT-MyStory.htm
