Hi everyone.
An update: after burying myself for several days in the research & literature, I prepared a lengthy report and met with my hematologist on Wednesday. I was a bit anxious..knowing that doctors probably roll their eyes at the thought of their patient doing their own research and thinking they might know something they don't.
Even though she was persistent in her belief I needed to be on a drug and anagrelide was the one for me, in the end, she did agree to let me go off the meds for a trial period of a few months and chart my counts. She took all the literature I had printed out from Mayo Clinic, etc. so that was a good sign.
Something else occurred which surprised me. She said she is part of a focus group of a mixed group of 40 some physicians each Friday, including surgeons, medical oncologists and so forth and they talk about specific cases. She said she would take my case before them and see what others had to say. I was pretty grateful for that!
Overall, I'm asymptomatic. But I definitely have other issues going on. This past June, before I knew I had ET, I suffered a nervous breakdown. Since then I've been experiencing troughs of depression and anxiety disorder. Oh my, what a struggle this has been! I've always heard about such things but never in my life thought I would experience them. I have to admit, I used to think of depression as "sadness," that someone can "snap out of." How little did I know!
Depression & anxiety disorder is a real physical ailment which is incredibly difficult. I'm 41 and have had my share of life's difficulties. This has been my most difficult challenge in life by far. I think it arose from excessive job stress and years of insomnia. I'm getting help for it..counseling and meds. I'm on Lexipro, but it's only been a few weeks and I don't think it has had time to fully kick in.
What a debilitating trial depression & anxiety disorder can be. Give me physical suffering any day of the week. If you have your wits about you, you can handle physical suffering, but mental suffering... the anguish can be unbearable. For those who pray, please pray for me.
I've also had this burning hole on the lower right side of my stomach for months now. At first I thought it was perhaps an ulcer due to the anxiety, but sometimes it feels like it moves. I'm not sure who to see to have that checked out.
I will keep you updated on my situation. I'm only taking 2 baby aspirin a day now.
Peace, and all the best to each one of you in my ET family.
Mark
