Hi everyone and a Happy New Year to you all. Looking back I realise that I didn’t post much during 2012 but I do log in every couple of weeks to see what’s happening. I suppose it’s the result of leading a busy life and trying to push my ET to the back of my mind. I generally don’t have too many symptoms so just keep taking the tablets.
My brief history is I was diagnosed with ET Jan 2006 and started taking Hydrea in Jan 2007 when my platelets went over a million. My counts had a tendency to increase slowly so the dosage was gradually increased from 10 tablets to 18 tablets per week by May 2011. During this period my platelets were generally maintained in the 600s - 800s.
However, recently, without any change in Hydrea dosage, my platelets have been quite erratic. There was a big jump from 530 in August to 1100 in October. My haematologist suggested repeating and then increasing the frequency of blood tests to get a better handle on things. Results since have been
26 Oct 920
2 Nov 550
15 Nov 520
12 Dec 950
21 Dec 590
I find it surprising that my platelets can increase or decrease by more than 300 over a period of 10 days. I am wondering if there could be a cycle, and the result depends on when during the cycle the sample happens to be taken. I shall be seeing my haematologist again in two months and I plan to have another couple of tests before then.
I don’t recall there being any previos posts on significant
sudden variations in platelets. Has anyone experienced anything
similar or have any suggestions as to what could be causing it?
