Hi everyone, yes I too have had a serious illness prior to being diagnosed with thrombo. Last year I had a blood clot in the back of my head, was lucky that it has not caused any long term problems but did have a week in hospital on blood thinning drip and then warfarinfor 3 months and asprin subsequently. I 46 and have otherwise been healthy and fit.
Iwas wondering if any body has a family history of bllod disease, as my father has polycythaemia, over production of red blood cells. |

Hi Judith h,
Nice to make contact and glad to hear of your recovery from the blod clot. I had a heart attack prior to my diagnosis of Et and have recently been put on 1.5mg of Hydroxy. Do you mind me asking what/how much medication you are currently on? No one else in my family have had Blood/heart problems that i know of although i did have an uncle who died of a stroke/heart attack a few years ago which was put down to "old age". That said,i have been trying to persuade my relatives to have blood tests just in case. |

Thanks for the reply, i am taking 500mg per day of hydroxyurea, plus 1 cartia tablet [asprin]. I went back to the specialist this week and my count is now down to 612 so pleased about that. Iwould like to think that it will plateau and i can try and go off the medication, Iam very interested in alternatives so if any one has any thing to share, Iwould be pleased to hear about it.

One of the reasons I chose not to start taking my prescribed Hydroxy was that my Haem said that once on it, you are likely to be on it for the rest of your life. The idea being that once the correct dose to reduce Platelets to an acceptable level has been established, then your regime is set. I read (somewhere) that there is also a risk that when coming off any Platelet suppressing medication, you get an over reaction, sending your count higher than before.
As for alternatives, I'll know in March whether my Glucosamine trial has been successful. They won't give me a blood test before then How is your count now? Mark J.
